Licensing MS Windows and MS Office in TUKE Training Rooms

Due to changes in Microsoft’s licensing policy, the Insitute of Computing Technology (ICT) has implemented a KMS (Key Management Services) server, which enables automatic licensing for MS Office (version 2016 and later) and MS Windows 10 (version 2004 and later). This server is available only within the TUNET university network and cannot be accessed from outside.

Licensing is based on the agreement between Microsoft and the Slovak Ministry of Education. To successfully activate a PC via the KMS server, the following conditions must be met:

  1. The computer must run Windows 10 EDU, version 2004 or later.
  2. The computer must be joined to the TUKE Active Directory domain.

Windows Licensing

Before starting, it’s recommended to update your Windows system.

Changing the Edition

A. If your device is using Windows HOME, you need to switch to Windows EDU by entering a Microsoft-provided upgrade key. This process will require restarting the computer, possibly more than once. After the change, Windows will identify as an EDU edition, but it will not yet be activated.

changepk /ProductKey NW6C2-QMPVW-D7KKK-3GKT6-VCFB2

or

changepk /ProductKey 2WH4N-8QGBV-H22JP-CT43QMDWWJ

if you have the so-called "N" version of Windows.

The PC will then restart (in some cases multiple times).

B. If your device is using Windows PRO, a different activation method is used, but the result is the same: conversion to Windows EDU edition. After starting the command prompt (as administrator), enter the slmgr command to change the Windows product key:

slmgr.vbs /ipk NW6C2-QMPVW-D7KKK-3GKT6-VCFB2

or

slmgr.vbs /ipk 2WH4N-8QGBV-H22JP-CT43Q-MDWWJ

if you have the so-called "N" version of Windows.

We recommend restarting the PC.

After restarting the computer, Windows will be in the EDU edition with a GVLK (Generic Volume License Key) product key, which the KMS server is already responding to. The GVLK key licenses the given OS only after verification against the KMS server. It cannot be used separately!

A short instructional video for this process is available here:

Joining a PC to the Active Directory

Before joining a PC to the domain, the device must be placed in its final physical location to ensure it receives the correct permanent IP address.

If you have installed the Windows operating system in the EDU edition (including versions originally installed as HOME or PRO and converted to EDU as described earlier), you will need to run the AddPcToDomain.exe script as administrator. This script registers the computer in the TUKE Active Directory and enables automatic activation of Windows through the KMS server.
The script can be obtained by submitting a request to the Software Licenses queue via the TUKE Helpdesk).

Important:
You must run the script twice:

  • The first run prepares the system and reboots the computer.
  • The second run completes the actual process of joining the PC to the ad.tuke.sk domain.

Activation will be enabled once you submit the completed form: Request for Licenses for Training and Teaching Rooms.

MS Office Licensing

To license MS Office, the PC must be joined to the ad.tuke.sk domain as described above. In this case, MS Office activates automatically, even after reinstallation.

MS Office 2019 and 2021

Office 2019 and 2021 are no longer distributed as ISO images. Instead, they are installed using a script via the Office Deployment Tool (ODT).

Installation steps:

  1. Download the ZIP archive for the required Office version (e.g., Office2019-SK.zip) and save it locally.
  2. Extract the archive to a folder (e.g., C:\Office2019-SK).
  3. Open the Command Prompt (preferably as Administrator) and navigate to the folder C:\Office2019-SK.
  4. Start the installation using the included configuration script (setup /configure tuke.xml).

If you need a 32-bit version, please contact: swlic@helpdesk.tuke.sk

MS Office 2016

Office 2016 is installed from an ISO file, which is available upon request. After installation, activation must be done manually.
Activation depends on whether you installed the 32-bit or 64-bit version. Specific activation commands (CMD-based) are provided in the official IT guide.

For 64 – bit version of MS Office:

cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XQNVK-8JYDB-WJ9W3-YJ8YR-WFG99
cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:kms.tuke.sk
cscript ospp.vbs /act

For 32 – bit version of MS Office:

cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office16"
cscript ospp.vbs /inpkey:XQNVK-8JYDB-WJ9W3-YJ8YR-WFG99
cscript ospp.vbs /sethst:kms.tuke.sk
cscript ospp.vbs /act
