Changing MS Windows HOME to Windows EDU for TUKE Employees

Under the M365 A3 license used by TUKE — based on the EES agreement between Microsoft and the Ministry of Education of the Slovak Republic — it is possible to use a Windows Upgrade license. This means that a purchased Windows 10/11 HOME license can be upgraded to a higher edition: Windows 10/11 Education (EDU).

Since Microsoft has changed its Windows licensing method, UVT TUKE has prepared a solution in the form of a KMS server (Key Management Services), which enables automated licensing of MS Windows 10/11 EDU within the TUNET network.
The KMS server is not accessible outside the TUNET network!

To successfully activate a license via the KMS server, the PC must meet the following conditions:

  1. Have a legally purchased Windows 10/11 HOME operating system
  2. The Windows HOME edition must be changed to Windows EDU (GVLK)
  3. The PC must be joined to the TUKE Active Directory (AD) domain

License activation will be granted based on submission of the form:
Request for Windows EDU License Upgrade – TUKE Employee

Before making any changes, it is recommended to install all available Windows updates.

Changing the Edition

If you have Windows HOME installed, open the Command Prompt as Administrator and enter the following command to change the product key:

changepk /ProductKey NW6C2-QMPVW-D7KKK-3GKT6-VCFB2

or, if you have the “N” version of Windows:

changepk /ProductKey 2WH4N-8QGBV-H22JP-CT43QMDWWJ

The PC will then restart (in some cases multiple times).

After restarting, the system will be in the Windows EDU edition with a GVLK (Generic Volume License Key). This key works only when verified through the KMS server — it cannot be used independently.

Joining a PC to the Active Directory Domain

Before joining the PC to AD, it must be assigned a registered IP address and connected to the TUNET network using this address.

On a computer with Windows EDU (including HOME converted to EDU as described above), you must run the AddPcToDomain.exe script as Administrator.
You can obtain this script by submitting a request to the Software Licenses queue on the TUKE Helpdesk.

The script must be run twice:

  • The first run prepares the system and configures the necessary domain settings, followed by a reboot.
  • The second run completes the process of joining the PC to the ad.tuke.sk domain.

After the PC’s IP address is approved on the license server, Windows will be automatically activated via KMS.
